Meet the Instructors

Barry Friedman

Barry Friedman has been the Director of Tennis at The Claremont Club since 1994. He has been a full-time tennis professional since 1977. He is a USPTA Level I Professional. His many certifications include the USTA High Performance Coaching Program. Currently he is the Head Coach and administrator for the San Gabriel Valley CTC, which is part of the USTA National Junior Player Development Program. Barry has coached sectional teams to National Championships and has coached players ranked from the sectional level to those internationally ranked. Barry also enjoys teaching and developing players of all ages and levels. Another aspect of Barry's involvement in tennis is that he directs numerous sanctioned events for the USTA, including a men's pro future's event and a boy's and girl's 12's and 14's National Open. Barry played junior tennis in Northern California. He attended UCLA where he earned a degree in Economics and was a member of the tennis team. Barry is married with two grown daughters.

Allison Mori

Allison Mori has been the Adult Tennis Team Coordinator and Master Teaching Professional at The Claremont Club since 1993. She has taught tennis for for 26 years and is a USPTA certified instructor. Allison has taught top juniors in the U.S. and ranked international students as the Head Pro at John Newcombe's Tennis Academy and The Briar Club in Texas, as well as, The Seattle Tennis Club & Mercer Island Country Club in Washington. She has coached junior, adult, and club teams to the National level at The Claremont Club. Allison attended UC Berkeley where she earned her degree with a focus in Biology and Business, all while a member of the varsity tennis team. Allison was a top junior, earning rankings in both Southern California and nationally. While in high school, she represented the United States as a member of the International Junior Team with matches in Holland, Germany and France. Allison has been happily married for nineteen years with three wonderful children.

Lionel Rival

Lionel Rival has been the Junior Tennis Coordinator and Master Teaching Professional at The Claremont Club since 1996. Lionel was born in Buenos Aires, Argentina. He graduated as an optometrist in l987 and soon after started traveling around the world as a tennis coach. He worked on the ATP tour as a coach for numerous players from Argentina from 1987-1994. Since joining the staff at The Claremont Club, Lionel has continued to work with many sectional and national ranked juniors from Southern California. Lionel is married with two children.

Darren Richer

Darren Richer has been the Director of Junior Development and Master Teaching Professional at The Claremont Club since 2002. Darren grew up in this area and went to the University of Denver on a full tennis scholarship. He won his conference singles title in 1996 and 1998. After graduating with a degree in finance, he went to work for PBI an international tennis management company. He coached throughout the Caribbean, Europe and Asia. Since returning to Southern California, Darren has been developing some of the top juniors in the area. Darren is a certified USPTA High Performance Coach, as well as a Competition Training Center coach since 1999. Darren continues to work with many top-ranked juniors, as well as, club level players. His energy and enthusiasm are contagious and helps to inspire his students. Darren is married and has one adorable daughter.

Ross Friedman

Ross Friedman joined The Claremont Club tennis staff in 2005. He is a certified USPTA Level 1 Professional. Ross has taught tennis for 23 years and worked around the world in such places as Mexico, Thailand, Israel, Australia, the Bahamas and the Caribbean with the international, bilingual Club Med Resort, where he was in charge of the ATP teaching program, clinics and daily social tournaments. Ross was in in charge of the TCC Tennis Summer Camps in 2008, 2009, 2013-14 and also teaches numerous private lessons and clinics with a lighthearted and fun approach to learning. Ross attended Cal State University Long Beach.

Jami Johnson

Jami is certified to teach 10 and Under Tennis.  She has completed the USTA NetGen Safe Play program and is well versed in Red, Orange, Green strategies for teaching tennis to beginners.  Jami has been teaching tennis for over 5 years and has been playing on USTA and other tennis teams for 20 years.  She especially enjoys introducing tennis fundamentals to students of all ages and seeing them continue to play tennis.  She believes tennis is a sport of a lifetime!

Additional Fees for Non-Members

  • Adults: An additional $5 per 1/2 hour, $10 per hour
  • Juniors: An additional $2 per 1/2 hour, $4 per hour
